A HyperNet Model for Large Hypertext Systems

Two major problems with large hypertext systems are the user disorientation and lack of search ability. The problems, we believe, are mainly caused by the lack of semantics and modularity in hypertext data models. In this paper, a HyperNet model is proposed as a data model for large hypertext systems aimed at the above problems, which features strong modularity, attribute-based link semantics a...

The role of individual differences and metaphor in hypermedia navigation

Research and practice within interaction design are often based on the assumption that computer interfaces are understood through metaphorical reasoning, in that they communicate abstract information by depicting) a concrete object or situation from which the abstractions can be inferred. Within hypertext systems, metaphors are used to assist in navigating, or locating information, by providing...

ART-SHTA: A Tool for Sculptural Hypertext Authoring

The ART-SHTA (Sculptural HyperText Authoring) tool supports information and concept structuring for analytical and scholarly compositional tasks. ART-SHTA employs three hypertext techniques: sculptural hypertext, spatial hypertext, and hierarchy browsing. While the notion of sculptural hypertext was originally introduced to provide tools for hypertext narratives, our approach demonstrates that ...

A Spatial Hypertext Tool for Sculptural Authoring

This paper presents ART-SHT (Sculptural HyperText), a tool we have developed that supports sculptural authoring. We face more and more such tasks, as Web-based scholarly authoring, where one first needs to understand relationships among a large number of collected pieces of information, which are potentially connected to one another, and to add modify, or replace them by creating new informatio...

The Effects of Hypertext Structure, Presentation, and Instruction Types on Perceived Disorientation and Recall Performances

Navigation in web-based environments is one of the challenging tasks for hypertext readers. During reading, hypertext readers are reported to allocate their cognitive resources to meet the cognitive demands and are often reported to get disoriented while navigating through hyperlinks. Meanwhile, readers’ understanding of hypertext structures and memories interact while navigating between pages....
